Stony Creek Jane Doe: Remains Found In Shallow Grave In 1948
It is believed she was somewhere between 15 and 25-years-old.
It is important to continue sharing cases of the unidentified, so today, we’re going to take a look at a woman whose remains were located 80 years ago. For this article, I will refer to her as Stony Creek Jane Doe—named after the tiny Virginia town where she was located. In recent years, the town boasted a population of 176.
The only information I could pull about Stony Creek Jane Doe came from the National Missing & Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). What I was able to gather was that on September 6, 1948, the remains of this young lady were found in a shallow, makeshift grave by highway workers. A medical examiner would later determine that she was under 30 years of age, most likely between 15 and 25, and she had been dead for approximately six weeks.

A Look Into The Small Town
Unfortunately, a cause of death was not listed in the report, but due to the nature of her burial, murder could be suspected. However, Stony Creek is a railroad town where most residents live far below the poverty line. It reportedly has a total area of 0.6 miles, and it could be argued that this young lady’s death was the result of something not related to violence. She may have simply been buried there by a local family or by someone traveling by train with her when she passed. However, all possibilities remain theories.
Stony Creek also has a rich U.S. Civil War history and supported the Confederacy, so the town’s Antebellum roots run deep.
Stony Creek Jane Doe: What To Know
When she was alive, Stony Creek Jane Doe may have stood 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighed between 130 and 135 pounds. She had brown hair, and her eye color is unknown due to decomposition. Her face was unrecognizable due to putrefaction. One or both of her hands were reportedly not recovered.
