The Chicago Tribune reported years ago that Sonya was somewhere in the vicinity of 75th Street and Champlain Avenue on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, when she went missing. She had graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in journalism. Later, she welcomed a daughter and, according to The Charley Project, began “abusing substances to cope” with a bipolar diagnosis. Soon, Sonya’s mother obtained custody of Sonya’s daughter.
Further, it was also stated that Sonya was in a relationship with an abusive, live-in boyfriend. Sonya’s mother agreed to check in with Sonya every few days, and if no contact was made, the police should be called. She believes Sonya was the victim of foul play.
After Sonya vanished, the boyfriend was incarcerated on unrelated charges. Police reportedly declined to interview him, and he was later released. A year later, the boyfriend was dead. He was never questioned in connection with Sonya’s disappearance.
