Phyllis Rome, 22: Deaf & Mute Woman Vanishes After Visiting Nightclub
Twenty-somethings are known to go to nightclubs for fun, but no one expects for them to disappear.
Not many know where Clarksdale, Mississippi, is, but it was the home of Phyllis Rome. On June 19, 1993, the weather was beginning to heat up in the Deep South, making Red's (also known by the names of Red's Lounge, Red's Juke Joint, Red's Nite Spot, Red's Nightclub, and Red's Night Club) a hotspot for those looking to have a good time. The bar would be the last place anyone would see or hear from Phyllis, who was reportedly deaf and mute.
A Night Out Turns Into A Mystery
Little is known about Phyllis Rome and her case, but the 22-year-old was reportedly last located at Red's around 8:00 p.m. However, what she did after her night on the town is unclear. Who she may have been with is unknown, if anyone. Additionally, there has yet to be information given about her personal life, career, or family. Yet, like small towns often have, rumors about what possibly happened to Phyllis have plagued investigators.
According to reports, rumors were floating around Clarksdale that Phyllis had been murdered, and her body was disposed of somewhere in the city's downtown area. Authorities followed up on the gossip and searched the area. Unfortunately, they did not find evidence that would aid in finding Phyllis Rome.
A Mistake Made By Police
Then, police made a strange announcement stating that Phyllis was no longer missing. They claimed that she was spotted at the Coahoma County Courthouse after officials said they recognized her from her photo in the newspaper. However, police would return shortly after with yet another announcement, once again declaring that Phyllis was still a missing person.
