Kennedy Maxie, 7, Was Hit By Stray Bullet While Riding In Car
Sadly, she passed away from her injuries.
Like millions of other children, seven-year-old Kennedy Maxie looked forward to celebrating the holidays with her family. On Monday (December 21), the little girl was reportedly Christmas shopping with her mother and her aunt in Atlanta, Georgia. While they were riding in their vehicle near the Phipps Plaza, an unexpected tragedy occurred. Kennedy had been struck in the back of the head by a stray bullet—a fluke moment that ignited panic.

Initially, Kennedy’s aunt and mother didn’t notice that the girl had been hurt, but they later told police that they had heard gunfire nearby. When they noticed that Kennedy was acting strangely, they rushed her to the closest hospital while contacting authorities about the unusual incident. Investigators believe it was a chance occurrence that possibly stemmed from a group of people who got into an argument that escalated into violence.
“The aunt continued to drive and a short time later noticed that the victim was acting strangely. The aunt realized the child had been shot and drove to the hospital where the victim was taken into surgery in critical condition,” police said.
At the time of this publication, no suspects have been named. Authorities are offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the person or persons involved. Many influencers in the Atlanta area, including celebrity figures and politicians, have spoken out against the gun violence in the bustling city.
“Once again, we’re addressing a situation of a senseless shooting that we believe arose from individuals unable to resolve a situation civilly,” said interim Police Chief Rodney Bryant.
“Right now, it looks like it was the wrong place at the wrong time,” said homicide commander Pete Malecki.
Kennedy’s godmother has set up a GoFundMe to help the family with hospital and recovery costs. If you would like to help, please visit the page here.
